Design Technology (DT)

Design Technology Intent

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Our children at Summerfield Primary School use creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Our pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art as well as learning how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. As part of the design process, time is built in to reflect, evaluate and improve on prototypes using design criteria throughout to support this process. Opportunities are provided for our children to evaluate key events and individuals who have helped shape the world, showing the real impact of design and technology on the wider environment and helping to inspire children to use these skills and opportunities to become the next generation of innovators.

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

Design and Technology Implementation

At Summerfield Primary School Design and Technology follows the National Curriculum 2014 to cater for EYFS, Key stage 1 and Key stage 2.

Whilst the EYFS and National Curriculum forms the foundation of our curriculum, we make sure that our children learn additional skills, knowledge and understanding and enhance our curriculum as and when necessary. This is achieved by -

*Delivery of design and technology projects with a clear structure.

*Delivery showing clear following of the design process where each project fill and follow: research, design, make and evaluate.

*A range of skills will be taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken

*Clear and appropriate cross curricular links to underpin learning in multi areas across the curriculum giving the children opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.

*Independent learning: In design technology children may well be asked to solve problems and develop their learning independently. This allows the children to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning in Design Technology.

*Collaborative learning: In design and technology children may well be asked to work as part of a team learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.

Design and Technology Impact

We ensure the children at Summerfield Primary School -
• develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
• build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
• understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. Our children will design and make a range of products.

A good quality finish will be expected in all design and activities made appropriate to the age and ability of the child. The children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
